We are fundraising for Canteen in memory of Félix
When cancer turns their world upside down because of their own cancer diagnosis, that of a close member, or the death of a loved one, Canteen helps young people by providing them a wide range of free support services. This includes specialised counselling, social connection events and programs, 24/7 online support and access to resources and personalised support.
In February 2024, Félix wrote:
“Shortly after my diagnosis, the care team at the Royal North Shore Hospital referred me to Canteen, and I was fortunate to benefit from the counselling services as well as the peer support that Canteen provides from the beginning of my cancer journey. This included attending local and online Canteen organised events, as well as the 2022 national summer retreat. There, I was fortunate to meet other young people affected by cancer from around Australia, greatly benefiting from our interactions. The people I met through Canteen gave me insight and advice into their unique experiences living with cancer. My own experience and hearing other patients tell me about how Canteen supports them have given me an always greater appreciation of the organisation.”
As is apparent from his words, Félix embraced the support Canteen provided by way of counselling, events and programs. More than once, he told us that it was good to be able to talk to people his age who really understood how he felt because they were also dealing with cancer. Canteen provided him a safe place, and he took great pride in his work as a Canteen youth ambassador.
