Our goal

The journey

Over the past four years the Road Raise event has raised over $650,000. These vital funds have provided more than 16,000 hours of vital support to young people aged 12-25 who are impacted by cancer.

Now in its 5th tour, after a pause due to COVID-19 Road Raise 2021 will see 35 like-minded individuals with a love of cycling, a sense of community and a desire to push their physical boundaries tour some of the most picturesque scenery South Australia has to offer in a bid to raise over $200,000!

The challenge - 1000 kilometres AND a total climbing elevation over 11,800 metres (the equivalent of riding over Mt Everest AND Mt Kosciuszko) will see the dedicated Road Raise participants challenge themselves physically and mentally as they climb towards their goal to truly make a difference in the lives of young Australians.

About CanTeen

Every year, another 23,000 young people are affected by cancer, whether it’s a close family member’s diagnosis or their own. That’s 63 young people every day.

We get it. Just when life should be full of possibilities, cancer crashes into a young person’s world and shatters everything. CanTeen is the game changer.

We help young people cope with their own cancer or cancer in their family. Through CanTeen, they learn to explore and deal with their feelings about cancer, connect with other young people in the same boat and, if they’ve been diagnosed themselves, we provide specialist, youth-specific treatment teams.

By feeling understood and supported, young people develop resilience and can rebuild the foundations that crumbled beneath them when cancer turned their life upside down. That’s how CanTeen is the difference.

CanTeen works by having young people at the centre of everything we do. Combined with our leading-edge research into the emotional and social impacts of cancer, it ensures that we truly understand how cancer is different in a young person’s world.

The impact

Our goal of $300,000 will provide over 1,333 free counselling sessions to help young people navigate through cancer.

At these sessions, they learn practical ways to move forward and deal with their emotions in a healthy way.

CanTeen counselling services provide young people with an outlet to talk about thoughts and feelings they might not want to tell other people in their life. Our specially trained counsellors help young people develop skills and strategies to deal with the impact cancer is having – and just listen.

Young people can talk to a counsellor when they like and how they like. Online and phone counselling is available seven days a week and face to face counselling is available in specific sites around the country.

Meet one of our riders

"Riding both 2018 and 2019 Road Raise tours, I can honestly say they have been two of the best experieinces in my life.

"My niece was diagnosed with leukaemia more than two years ago, opening my eyes to the important role organisations like CanTeen play in supporting these families through unbelievably difficult times. So when the opportunity presented itself to ride on Road Raise 2018, my brother in law and I jumped at it.

"The fundraising gives you a sense of purpose and a genuine feeling that you're making a difference for people who are doing it way tougher than you.

"The team approach is amazing. I've met some life-long friends through training in the months prior as we help each other through the fundraising process and then spend a great week together on the road to truly making a difference.

"The ride itself epitomises what Road Raise and CanTeen is all about. It’s a group of people with a common goal to raise critically important funds for and awareness of CanTeen, as well as making it through the challenges of a multi-day tour.

"To come together as a team to support each other and raise these funds while sharing in some really funny, challenging and emotional times is the reason the ride is so rewarding and enjoyable.
