I'm being brave for CanTeen
How it began…
In 2011, after attending an RUMAD (Are You Making a Difference) conference, students from Grade 5/6HG were set a challenge to make a difference in the lives of others. Students formed groups and each came up with ideas and initiatives in ways they could help either people less fortunate than themselves or people going through a challenging time.
One group of students came up with the idea to shave their heads on National Bandana Day and through sponsorship, raise money for CanTeen Australia to help children and teenagers suffering from cancer.
That year, six boys and our Grade Four teacher at the time, shaved their heads in front of a whole school assembly and raised over $2500 in sponsorship and donations to go to CanTeen. One of the boy’s mother Sue Lockwood, had cancer at the time and was a strong driver in supporting the fundraising for the group. Unfortunately, two months after the event, she lost her life to cancer which has made this cause even closer to our hearts.
After the success of
the first fundraiser, students continued to ask if they could run the Be Brave
and Shave again, raise money and shave their heads in front of the whole school.
We supported these students and their passion to make a difference and organised
another assembly, again raising a significant amount of money.
Each year the force of
brave and compassionate students grew larger and fundraising amounts higher. In
2013, 18 students shaved their heads and raised $7245. In 2014, 26 students
shaved their heads and raised $10 095.
That year we also introduced the concept of girls cutting a minimum of 20cm off their hair which we then sent off to Panteen Lovely Lengths where wigs were made for cancer patients. In 2015, 28 students including our first female student shaved their heads, enabling the group to raise $14 230. In 2016, 46 students, including three females raised a combined effort of $18 180 and last year in 2017, 68 students, both male and female, teachers and community members shaved their heads to raise $24 875. Last year in 2018, an amazing 46 students raised $17 292.85 with the enthusiasm (and hair) still growing for our 2019 campaign. In the seven years we have been supporting this tradition, Trevallyn Primary School have proudly raised a grand and impressive total of $94 417 for CanTeen Australia.
Our
Future Goals….
This year in 2019, our aspirational aim is to have over 50 students participate in the fundraising event and raise over $20 000 to reach the astonishing overall total of $115 000 in donations to CanTeen Australia.
With
this tradition embedded into our community engagement and involvement, annual
calendar, classroom practice and school values, we continue to get behind
CanTeen Australia and raise much needed funds in supporting young children and
teenagers who live through
the challenges cancer places on patients, their families and support group.
