Newmojam 2022

Newmojam is a fun afternoon of music and raffles. This year is is on August 14th at Hamilton North Bowling Club, from 2-5pm.

In 1994, Troy Newman organized a fundraising bike ride from Sydney to Newcastle, in support of Canteen.  Troy had suffered from Hodgkins Lymphoma and was a Canteen member. Troy raised enough funds over the 5 years of his event to initiate a Canteen office and staff in the Hunter.

Therese and Brian Newman had four children; Craig, Troy, Cory & Kadie. Of these four Cory is the only remaining child. Craig, Troy & Kadie suffered a virulent genetic syndrome called Wolfram’s syndrome. The three siblings all had a very serious complications associated with the syndrome.  Troy survived the longest dying in 2003 aged 26, Craig passed away aged 21 & Kadie at age 16. 

In 2006, Cory Newman with the support of the local musicians, dancers, performers at large, and the wider community of the Hunter Region staged the first ‘Newmojam’.  In its 15th year, ‘Newmojam’ is a musical showcase that commemorates the Newman children’s love of performing and music.  The money raised from this event is donated to Canteen. Cory's wife Sam, Mother in law Maria and friend Louise Lockwood continue to stage this event with passion and an understanding that the monies raised make a big difference to ‘Hunter Canteen’.

‘Newmojam’ brings together the memory of the three young people as well as engages Canteen members in many aspects of the promotion and many Canteen members are performers.  Many of the performers in past years have been affected by cancer and display their commitment and understanding of the ‘Newmojam’ theme through their music and support.
